ATMIS condemns deadly al-Shabab attack in central town of Beledweyne

Mogadishu (HOL) - The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) condemned Saturday’s deadly al-Shabab suicide attack in Beledweyne, reportedly killing at least 36 people and wounding over 40.

“ATMIS strongly condemns the heinous attack on innocent civilians. This was intended to divert attention to the significant losses Al-Shabaab has suffered from the ongoing FGS-led offensives,” said the SRCC and Head of ATMIS, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef.

“On behalf of ATMIS, I extend our condolences to families, relatives and friends who lost their loved ones and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.

The al-Shabab militants claimed responsibility for the attack.

A truck loaded with explosive devices at a taxation and security checkpoint at the former beverages factory building called Horseed. The truck forcefully passed through the government-manned checkpoint. According to eyewitnesses, a pickup vehicle belonging to security personnel was chasing when the explosion occurred.
