Early career guidance for ‘Mabathoana students

In a bid to acquaint students with their occupational choice and providing knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to choose a career, ‘Mabathoana High School held a career guidance session for grade eight students on Friday.

According to the new curriculum, students can choose subjects that they want to major in from grade nine. In an interview with Informative Newspapers, Commercial Subjects Teacher Puleng Hlakane stated that students arrive in high school clueless about the careers that they want to pursue. She said career guidance will lead them into choosing accurately the career they want to pursue. Hlakane also mentioned that the selected mentors that have been chosen to motivate students

One of the speakers, BAM Group of Companies (BGC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) ‘Mamashiya Nšepeng Tšita Tikiso guided students that in order for them to succeed they need to help the next person. She advised them to start working hard as soon as now because what they are doing now will determine who they become in future. She said they should also be leaders from as early as now so that they can be an example to their peers, parents and the country in general, “I urge you to dream big in other to achieve big things in life”.

Narrating her journey from at ‘Mabathoana in 1989 she said she achieved everything because of balance, “I used to have a lot of fun in school but in the mist of it all that, I never compromised my school work,” said Tikiso.

After achieving the best grades from ‘Mabathoana, she went to the National University of Lesotho (NUL) where she majored in computer science. Which alternately let her to starting not one but many businesses together with her twin sister and younger sister under BGC.

Another key speaker and a product of ‘Mabathoana was Dr. Itumeleng Shale, she explained that she is not called doctor today because of studying medicine but rather for attaining the highest qualification in Law.

She advised them to accept all their home situations and rather focus on the opportunity that they are given, which is to study, and grab it with both hands, because some children do not have the privilege to attend school. As part of the motivation she left the students with a quote from Shake spear that says “I cried when I had no shoes until i saw a man who had no legs.”
