NATIONAL Under-20 ladies’ volleyball coach, Pekosela Nthako, has named a 12-member squad for the 2022 African Union Sport Council Region (AUSC) Region 5 Games.
The games will be held in Malawi in December 2022.
The squad was finalised following Lesotho Volleyball Association (LVA) selection trials held at Police Training College (PTC) in Maseru recently.
Nthako has retained most of the players who won Lesotho a gold medal last year when the games were held in the country.
Only four players, ‘Mampoetsi Moholobela (Redskins), ‘Matoka Kotelo (Mahlaseli), Feiki Makhoane (Mafeteng) and ‘Masechaba Makhathe from Lepereng OlympAfrica Centre (LOC) are new in the team.
LOC with seven players, have the biggest representation in the squad.
Starlet, Relebohile Phamotse, who is also part of the side, was named the overall best attacker and most valuable player during the games last year.
Nthako confirmed the squad and said they were ready to start their preparations once the logistical support was availed by LVA.
He said he had already submitted his training plan to the LVA. The plan entails holding weekend camps and friendlies in and outside Lesotho.
“I have submitted my training programme to the association and the plan was to start as soon as possible because the time is limited,” Nthako said.
“We want to have weekend camps or even full week camps during schools’ holidays. We also proposed some friendlies locally and internationally.”
He said he was confident with the team that he has assembled although he did not get a chance to scout players across the country.
“I am confident with the squad but I still believe we could have done better during the scouting process. However, due to the lack of resources we couldn’t travel to scout more players in the districts.
“I am happy that we have multiple players from one team and they also have international exposure,” Nthako said.
The squad is made up of Ntšontšo Koloko, Nonvula George, Matšeliso Phantši, Nthabiseng Pelea, Relebohile Ndaga, Relebohile Phamotse, ‘Masechaba Makhate, ‘Matoka Kotelo, Palesa Hlao, Keketso Monare, ‘Mampoetsi Moholobela and Feiki Makhoane.
