Donations stack up for Monklands toy appeal

Donations are arriving with Santa’s elves across Monklands as our annual toy appeal gets into full swing.

Collection points at Airdrie supermarkets Morrisons and Tesco and at Asda in Coatbridge are up and running and receiving gifts for youngsters to be distributed to a host of local good causes.

Gifts can be handed in for a further nine days, until Friday December 16, when they will be distributed to reach their recipients in good time for Christmas day.

Staff at all three supermarkets are once again enthusiastically supporting the appeal – currently in its 10th year – with colourful donation stations in each store attracting a host of welcome gifts.

Pictured getting behind this year’s appeal are its co-ordinator Norbert Grant, Asda manager Kevin McPhee, Maev MacVicar of Tesco, Morrisons community champion Ann Seagriff and manager Angela Conaghan and Asda community champion Ann Binks.

Big-hearted Monklands residents can hand in new toys, games, books, toiletries and vouchers for young people aged from birth to 16.

Long-serving appeal co-ordinator Norbert and volunteer colleagues from Airdrie hillwalking group will then sort and distribute the items to schools, community nurses, St Vincent de Paul society and the @home centre in Airdrie, who will make sure the gifts arrive with the children and young people they support in time to make it a merry Christmas.

More than 12,500 gifts have been donated by generous toy appeal supporters during the past decade, with the dedication of volunteers and supermarket teams helping to make it a success.
