Drink driver wrecks his Maserati in Birmingham city centre right in front of police car

A driver double the drink-drive limit crashed his luxury car into railings in a busy city centre - right in front of a police car waiting at nearby traffic lights.

Video showed the Maserati driving slowly through traffic lights in Birmingham before smashing into the obstacle.

Seconds later a nearby police car’s sirens are seen switching on as it makes a very slow journey to the scene of the accident a few yards away.

Body worn footage showed the driver getting out of the supercar in a daze.

He was breathalysed at the roadside and found to be twice the legal driving limit.

The stranded Maserati was soon visited by a police car

West Midlands Police said on its traffic account on Twitter: “This clip shows the dangers of drink driving.

“The driver of this Maserati was double the limit when he crashed in front of one of our patrols and was arrested.

“He was found guilty and was banned from driving for a year and fined a total of £2,190.”

A second police camera showed the damaged island railings which were ripped down by the impact of the crash. The front end of the motor also took a battering.

The incident happened in October 2022.

The driver was found to be twice the drink drive limit

One person replied to the tweet: “Never a cop around when you....oh wait.”

Another added: “Wow. Handy one of your officers was right there.

“Awful driving.”

Another replied: “Well at least in a year’s time he'll never think twice about doing it again...a whole year.

“I've said it before, we need to realise driving is a privilege, not a right.

“You do this kind of thing, you should never be allowed to drive again.”

Another agreed: “Not only he got banned and fined, the cost of that car, the insurance and all will cost him more.

“Maybe next time don't drink and drive. He could have killed somebody.”

Earlier this month a woman who began drinking at the age of 12 told how a life-threatening car accident forced her to get sober after years of alcohol abuse.

Saoirse Welland, 27, a childminder from Leamington Spa, became addicted to alcohol as a teen and claims she started drinking the equivalent of a one-litre bottle of booze every day - opting for everything from wine to beer and spirits.

But after being involved in a car accident, which nearly cost Saoirse her life, she knew she had to get help.
