France knife attack suspect held over attempted murder charges

The man suspected of stabbing six people at a park in France is being held by police on attempted murder charges.

French judges handed down preliminary charges after four children, including a three-year-old British girl, were injured in the attack on Thursday.

Two adults were also hurt in the stabbing at a lakeside park in the French Alps town of Annecy.

Under French law, preliminary charges means there is reason to suspect a crime has been committed but allows magistrates more time to investigate before deciding whether to send the case to trial.

French prosecutors said the 31-year-old suspected knifeman’s actions did not appear to be linked to terrorism.

The suspect, who is of Syrian nationality, is due to appear in court later today.

Lead prosecutor, Line Bonnet-Mathis, said the victims are no longer in a life-threatening condition.

It’s understood the British girl injured in the attack, who underwent surgery, should be able to leave Grenoble hospital within the next few days.

In a translated statement, Ms Bonnet-Mathis told a press conference today: ‘The prosecution service of Annecy immediately opened a case and the central directorate of the judicial police have also been involved.

‘The assailant at 9.47am was put into custody. The prosecution service of Annecy opened a judicial case for attempted murder.

‘The prosecution service put the assailant in provisional custody. And this afternoon he was going to be taken to court and he will appear before the judge.’
