Major Scots road closed as car bursts into flames with drivers warned to avoid area

A major Scots road was closed after a car burst into flames this morning. Emergency services rushed to Edinburgh City Bypass around 9.26am on Sunday to reports of a car on fire.

The road was closed Eastbound at Lothian Burn for just under one hour while the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service worked to extinguish the blaze. There are no reports of any injuries, Edinburgh Live reports.

Photographs from the scene show a red vehicle at the side of the road engulfed in flames. Drivers were warned to avoid the area after the road closed Eastbound at Lothian Burn.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Traffic Scotland told road users: "#A720 is closed Eastbound at Lothianburn due to a vehicle fire."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were in attendance at the Edinburgh City Bypass. We got a call at 9.26am of a vehicle fire. Two fire appliances attended. There were no reports of casualties."

The road reopened at 10.15am but drivers have been warned to take care due to heavy traffic in the area.
