MOVIE REVIEW: We size up DC sequel 'Shazam! Fury of the Gods'

Shazam was the DCEU’s brightest and breeziest flick but now that new universe head honcho James Gunn is looking to reboot the cinematic output of Marvel’s biggest rivals, the superhero and the stars of his sequel are, like many of their counterparts, on the chopping block.

In this case that’s a shame as Fury of the Gods builds on the successful origin story of its predecessor with an infectiously entertaining follow-up.

Teenager Billy Batson (Asher Angel) and the hero he turns into (Zachary Levi) this time have the support of their superpowered foster siblings - and it’s just as well as angry gods Hespera (Helen Mirren) and Kalypso (Lucy Liu) are on the warpath.

For all the action set-pieces and CGI creations, much like the in-joke quoted Fast & Furious series, family is the driving force behind the relatively simple story.

All of the teens, and their adult superhero versions, are very different but Levi does everything he can to ensure a team effort.

There are a few small touching moments where Angel/Levi reflect on their past, and the uncertainty of their future as they “age out” of the foster system.

Cooper Andrews ( Victor ) and Marta Milans ( Rosa ) feel real and down-to-earth as the heads of the family, with both seeing some action themselves this time around.

Mirren and Liu are fairly generic villainesses who heavily rely on their real-life star power but Djimon Hounsou ( Wizard ) has the time of his life.

We don’t actually see much of Angel as he’s normally in his adult form, so Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy steals the show among the younger cast.

Levi leads the way really well, ably supported by a vain Adam Brody, adorable Meagan Good and resolute Grace Caroline Currey.

It might not all work - the finale is cluttered and overcooked - but with an engaging ensemble, themes to relate to and a cracking cameo, I really hope lightning can strike a third time for Shazam and Co.
