The Secretary General of the ruling Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Jefferson Koijee, has recently made bold assertions regarding the party’s prospects in the upcoming elections, causing a wave of concern among Liberians. Koijee, who also serves as the city mayor of Monrovia, has been associated with various controversies and allegations of wrongdoing, despite his consistent denials.
Speaking at a party rally in Monrovia, Koijee confidently declared, “The CDC will win the upcoming elections on first-round balloting. This is a matter of life and death.” His remarks, aimed at rallying support for the ruling party, have sent shockwaves throughout the country, leaving many Liberians apprehensive about the potential implications of such a victory.
One of the main reasons behind the unease surrounding Koijee’s statements is his controversial reputation. Over the years, he has been linked to numerous allegations of misconduct and wrongdoing, tarnishing his image in the eyes of many citizens. These allegations range from corruption and abuse of power to involvement in illicit activities. Despite the persistent accusations, Koijee vehemently denies any wrongdoing.

In the meantime, a statement from Liberia’s traditional friend-the United States of America, has given Liberians some hope to Liberians.
The Chargé d’Affaires at the United States Embassy in Monrovia, Catherine Rodriguez has disclosed that the eyes of the world are focused on Liberia’s October 10, 2023 presidential and legislative elections and how they are managed.
Speaking at her first press roundtable interaction with the Liberian media on Wednesday, Chargé d’Affaires Rodriguez disclosed further that the United States, as a longstanding partner of Liberia, along with the international community, has been working closely with Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) to make sure that all election observers have full access to polling stations during election day, as well as access to the vote tallying.
She said: “The U.S. Embassy through USAID is directly supporting both international and domestic election observer missions, as well as our own mission observing the election process across the country.
“The United States is also prepared to assist in efforts to keep these elections free, fair, and peaceful by holding accountable anyone responsible for engaging in activities to undermine the democratic election process in Liberia through additional measures such as sanctions.”
The United States Government statement is not aiming directly at the young Liberian city mayor, but, it serves as a statement of hope for the poor suffering masses who fear, that based on what Koijee said, their votes may not count at the end of the October polls.
Liberians spoken to by this medium recently, said democratic elections are not a matter of life and death. They said it’s about winning based on the highest votes acquired from the electorates. That’s reason they wonder whether the Monrovia City Mayor has heard the caveat from the Americans.
As the election date draws nearer, the political atmosphere remains tense. The opposition parties are mobilizing their supporters, and citizens are closely monitoring developments to make informed decisions when casting their votes.
The upcoming elections will undoubtedly be a crucial moment for the future direction of the country, and the role of figures like Jefferson Koijee will continue to be a subject of scrutiny and debate.
