The Director of Indirect Tax Unit at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) Mr. Robert Quaye Dwuye, Jr. has said that Liberia is part of African countries that should be on par with other West African countries in term of tax expenditure.
He was speaking on Monday, May 22, 2023 during the opening of a three- day workshop for production of the first tax expenditure report on the GST in Liberia at the Bella Casa Hotel
in Monrovia. Mr. Dwuye said the purpose of tax expenditure forum is to align Liberia tax expenditure regime with ECOWAS Directive to ensure that those countries report accurately on tax expenditure.
He said the Tax expenditure report is to assist the government of Liberia in properly reporting on tax expenditure which is revenue performance in some sectors to encourage investment in the country.
Director Dwuye noted that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS ) through the programne appuia transition fiscal (PATIF) is very much interested in ensuring that government expenditure is in line with our national objective .
He further said ECOWAS is very interested in training all West African countries reporting tax expenditure within the given countries.
According to Director Dwuye, tax expenditure has three key components that deal with tax compliance or revenue as well focus on the development purposes.
He said the overview of the tax expenditure entails context of the new directive on the harmonization of the methodology for the evaluation of tax expenditure in ECOWAS member states.
Meanwhile, Director Quaye noted that the implementation status of the recommendation of the previous tax expenditure workshop was held in May 2022.
