In his exposés at the recently held summit in Washington DC, House Speaker, Dr. Bhofal Chambers, has articulated about the role of the Legislature in promoting good election policies and voters’ participation.
Dr. Chambers said it is incumbent upon the Legislative body of any Country to ensure the promotion of free, fair and credible election processes, as well as the sustenance of democracy.
He boasted of Liberia’s preparedness to conduct transparent elections this year (2023), owing to the numerous political will and the laws of the country which is set to ensure unhindered electoral participation of all Liberians of constitutional age.
Speaker Chambers also highlighted the role of the Legislature in promoting anti-graph initiatives, as well as peace-building, the rule of law, good governance and peace sustainability, amongst others.
Dr. Bhofal Chambers says his participation in the US Democracy Summit 2023 signifies the recognition of gains made in Liberia’s democratic trajectory. He intoned that he was elated that such convocation was called with Liberia been represented, along with other members of Legislatures and parliaments from around the world.
According to Dr. Chambers there were several issues discussed and he was enthusiastic to have served as one of the panelists. A dispatch from Washington DC has quoted the Speaker as saying that free and fair elections, and the role of the Legislature in promoting electoral policies are pedigree for good democratic credentials
In his elucidation, the Liberian Speaker touted that his country is moving towards a pivotal electioneering period that will cumulate into its third post war Presidential and Legislative elections. He asserted that Liberia is driving in such direction because there were measures put in place to have the people participation being accelerated for an effective outcome of political process.
Speaker Chambers informed other members of the Legislature from around the world that democracy itself is the heart of the process, but there are other things to complement and sustain democracy.
According to Speaker Chambers other topical issues discuss were global peace and security, the role of the Legislature in supporting international democratic commitments, corruption, and preserving democratic norms.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives has lauded USAID Group, the National Democratic Institute and the IRI for their involvement in the process.

The legislative track of the second Summit for Democracy is currently ongoing for three days, which started since Tuesday March 28-30, 2023, where approximately 60 senior elected representatives at the leadership level have convened in Washington, DC to participate in a number of in-person sessions.
The engagements provided opportunities for reform-oriented Members of Parliament to connect and learn more about their shared responsibilities and democratic practices.
Session topics planned during the three-day agenda included: The Role of Legislatures in Supporting National Democracy Commitments and Preserving Democratic Norms, The Legislature’s Role in Promoting Anti-Corruption Initiatives, Promoting Inclusivity to Strengthen Democratic Foundations, Engaging the Citizenry to Strengthen Informed Legislative Action, and Advancing Cross-Party Cooperation to Strengthen Democratic Resilience.
Participants came from members gathered from across the world, in addition to U.S. members of Congress, members of the U.S. government, and various organization leads, including from NDI and IRI.
