Rundu residents to protest killing of teen and violence

Rundu residents are planning a march to protest the killing of Sipilikita Malaka (18), who was fatally shot at the town on Friday.

The protest march is scheduled for Thursday from 15h00, with people expected to walk from Millenium Park, where Malaka was shot by an unknown gunman, to the family’s residence at Tutungeni.

“Greetings to all of you residents of Ru[n]du and the two Kavango regions at large. Most of you have heard about the untimely death of our young boy Malaka, who was murdered in the most gruesome way by an unknown person in Millenium Park. The killer is still at large, causing fear and insecurity in all of us,” reads a protest poster circulating on social media.

The family’s spokesperson, Mpasi Willem, yesterday confirmed that the protest would go ahead as planned.

Willem said this is not only aimed at protesting the gruesome death of their loved one, but about Rundu residents’ lives being threatened by violence and crime.

Malaka, who was a Grade 10 pupil at Rundu Senior Secondary School, was allegedly walking in a street at Millenium Park when he was allegedly shot in the chest by an unknown suspect at around 22h00.

The police at Rundu said the suspect is still at large.

Members of the public with any information or who witnessed the shooting are encouraged to contact the police to help with the suspect’s arrest.

The late Malaka is expected to be laid to rest on Saturday at Matende cemetery in the Kavango West region.
