ASPIRING local actors and directors will get the opportunity to learn more about the industry during a two-day acting workshop slated for next month.
The workshop will be facilitated by Namibian-born actor and film producer Dalton Ashikoto of Dash Studios in partnership with MultiChoice Namibia and Olive Entertainment Academy.
Ashikoto says the workshop, set for 7 and 8 October at MultiChoice’s head office, will cover subjects such as improving one’s skills, self-exploration through monologue, voice and movement control, effective communication and diction, spontaneity and creativity through improvisation, auditioning techniques, and the business of acting.
He says the workshop is discounted to ensure accessibility for all aspiring actors in Namibia and those wishing to pursue an acting career.
Ashikoto, who has been conducting various acting workshops both in Johannesburg and Namibia in conjunction with renowned South African actors, says the aim of the workshop is to provide participants with a comprehensive skill set that encompasses acting for different platforms.
He says participants will be immersed in a holistic acting experience, becoming proficient in the fundamental principles of acting for various media, such as film, theatre and television.
“We’ll focus on honing their acting techniques, ensuring they feel comfortable in front of the camera and breathing life into characters,” says Ashikoto, adding that with the workshop, participants will also gain insight into audition room dynamics, character interpretation and efficient ‘cold’ readings.
Participants will also be guided on approaching acting as a business, understanding self-promotion, industry networking, pitching projects, and building a professional portfolio, he says.
“As auditions can be intimidating, we’ll demystify the process, and attendees will learn to approach auditions with confidence, authenticity and a deep understanding of character objectives,” he says.
“Acting is not just an art, it’s a career. We’ll equip them with the knowledge and tools to navigate the industry, promote their work and create opportunities for themselves.”
All those interested are encouraged to book their spots early, as the venue has space for only 20 participants.
Ashikoto has more than 10 years’ acting experience, having appeared in both local and foreign series, plays and films.
He has appeared in more than 15 international films and soap operas, including ‘Generations: The Legacy’ and ‘Rhythm City’, and has also appeared in nine local and international commercials.
In addition, the actor says he has acquired qualifications in film-making and acting in Johannesburg in South Africa, and Miami and Los Angeles in the United States.
Tickets for the workshop cost N$750 per participant.
